The kids really enjoy working in the garden. This week we planted Potatoes, Lettuce and lots of flowers for the bees.
We've added a Bee hotel and a Butterfly hotel to give them a place to live. We put in supports for our Peas and covered the salad in case of a freeze. Our garden is progressing and the kids faces as they work is the greatest reward, even weeding isn't too much for them, because they're having fun. Many had never worked in a garden, some never seen one. This all makes the lesson so much more valuable to me, kids must learn that food doesn't grow in the grocery store and that work is involved. Most importantly, even children can produce food given land, tools and assistance. That's really the message the club wants to spread! If you're good at something, pass your knowledge on to the next generation. If we'd all share our knowledge freely, it could even spread to the poorest of the poor. In the end, they're the ones who need it the most and have been ignored far too long.

Year 2 in progress and looking goodLast year our garden was hurriedly put together since the OK to begin didn't arrive until shortly before summer vacation began, but this year things are progressing well.
We're still moving dirt, but planting has begun. My main purpose is to teach kids that vegetables don't grow in the grocery store and that a garden isn't only work, it can also be fun to produce all those vitamins. This year I have Heidi to help, this allows us to get more things done in a short time. It's progressing slowly, since the kids do all of the work they can handle, but it really is moving forward and we try to teach them about our environment while we work. I hope to have a few more pictures in the coming weeks, but here's a beginning. One of the 4th graders was nice enough to write a short report on his impressions, Thank you Nico, I'm happy you enjoyed yourself and that you understood the lesson. More to follow! |
